My past experience is making my own game engine built on DirectX 11. After discovering the flexibility of Unity and how robust it is for customization, I have made the switch and have not been happier, as it has freed me up from engine maintenance and can just concentrate on the work I want to do.
My favorite thing to work with is visual fx and am well versed in shaders. Aside from making assets for Unity, I am also using unity to create a point cloud renderer which is going very well.
