Gaia is no doubt a seriously powerful asset, it has allowed me to easily make diverse terrains that I would not otherwise have been able to create for my game. Overall, I like and will continue using the product.
With that said, it has also been frustrating at times to understand the product ecosystem as a whole (Gaia Pro, Gaia VS, Biome Packs, Stamper packs, Gaia for Unity 2021, not to mention the third party content, what's the difference?) and to get the systems to work as intended. I've particularly had a rough time with the included weather and lighting effects which seemed to do battle with and overwrite each other. I couldn't find a complete, online manual and no API reference for accessing functions via script. For a product at this price, I found this omission baffling. Apologies if it exists and I just couldn't find it, but that's still a problem. In many instances I had to open the scripts of the package and take a scalpel to them in the desperate hopes of getting things to work in a more limited, yet predictable way, which will make updating the package in the future difficult or impossible for me. Luckily my game has a deliberately lo-fi look and camera filter so I've been able to live with what is coming out of the asset but others desiring that perfect AAA look may struggle mightily.
I will give props to the team for having an online forum and for interacting and responding regularly. It must be difficult to troubleshoot with the large number of Unity versions, packages, and particular context-specific issues people have, so the forum can also be excused for often not having a solution, as well.

Gaia has been actively developed and supported since 2012, and as Unity versions evolve, so does Gaia. We offer a range of versions to cater to different needs and skill levels.
In our latest release during the 2025 Black Friday sale, which we gave to all of our Gaia Pro VS customers for FREE, we added a very cool Book of the Dead biome pack, new lighting profiles to go with it, and 140 high-quality themed stamps. We also threw in our GTS terrain shader, and our intention by adding so much more capability is to make Gaia the best value terrain generation tool on the asset store.
Gaia Pro VS does not seek to be a lighting tool. It's a terrain generation and streaming tool with many value-adds. Why do we do this? Because we want people to get the best experience we can, and because it's convenient to click a button in a wizard to have things set up for you automatically. Gaia offers these systems, but they are 100% optional, so that you can swap in your own preferred system or workflow. We understand your point that this can be confusing, but we hope this is a strength, as you now have a wide range of content and capabilities at your disposal, not just from us but from the community as a whole.
In terms of documentation, because it is so deep after 10 years of development, it's impossible to detail everything. It comes with a 100-page guide, and all the systems are self-documenting via the ? icon in the interface. There are also many videos. We focus on documenting core features rather than addons.
From a developer's perspective, we hear you about the API documentation and will add it to our guide in a future release.
We have an active support team. We respond to all enquiries and do our best to provide our customers with what they need to be successful. If there is something we can do for you, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.
I've been using Gaia for years. Easily one of the best assets available from the asset store. Easy to learn and use, very customizable, and excellent support. Build and customize large terrains in minutes or hours instead of weeks or months. Well worth the price.

I've made some amazing islands so far and i'm still learning 90% of the tools

Title. You don't have to code- it's menu-based. I have a LOT of things left to learn but I've made a few islands (intending to be a starter area for my project or a testbed or both) and they are BEAUTIFUL. As i learn about the different biomes/stamps/etc I'm able to do cooler stuff, but the VERY FIRST map i made with basically zero knowledge was on-par with something I'd expect from Far Cry 3 (but better looking).
I personally picked up a bundle on sale, so I got this with GeNa and some other assets (personally i think it was a STEAL but YMMV)- not sure if this asset alone will give the results i'm speaking of- but this company appears to know what they are doing and I know for a fact that making detailed, beautiful levels used to take large teams a decent amount of time. I made some of the most beautiful landscapes i've ever seen in 20-30 minutes (maybe a few more hours if you want to really customize, but just the basic logic makes some amazing places).
I've thought that the solo dev/small teams are in a golden-age due to the tools for a bit- THIS is the kind of tool that lets small/single dev groups compete with those companies that have 200 people to throw at level-creation. And what's cool is it seems to keep getting better as i get more assets to include (different biomes like Lava Mountain, Ancient Mountain Stamps, etc).
This is EXACTLY the type of tool i was hoping i'd find when starting game design. It's almost unreal how much time it can save you AND you are giving up ZERO quality.... actually i'd argue you are gaining some. Thanks, devs.

Interestingly, Gaia Pro VS is also used by large teams, and I just spent a year working on a project with one for a very large environment.
We have a new product Storm which you can get directly from us, and this takes both the performance, and visuals to an entirely new level.
Our goal with Storm is to deliver both the natural, and the built world, at up to 10x the framerates possible with Unity, and AAA levels of quality.
Highly recommended: beginners get a wow effect in a few clicks, while experts can take advantage of all the advanced features.

I bought Gaia several years ago and was surprised to find the version I bought was no longer supported, and that if I wanted it to work I had to buy essentially the same thing again for $149. Nonetheless, I wanted to save time so proceeded. Using stamps intead of using Unity's admittedly poor height tool saved me maybe 10 minutes? Not having to draw every texture saved me another 10 minutes. What was really frustrating it in play mode my trees would disappear at a certain distance, so I can't use the included trees might as well have bought "Gaia for Unity 6" for $29. Would prefer to have my money back at this point if I could.

It's funny, but the thing that drove me to create Gaia in the first place was making my worlds in Unity by hand, and I know that Gaia does a far better job, and faster, than I ever could.
It appears that your primary concern is the culling distance of your trees. Gaia provides defaults in the trees themselves and also features a culling system to help balance performance against the amount of content being rendered, which is easily adjustable.

I've been using Gaia, GeNa, SECTR and the other tools for 3 years. I have made a solid number of worlds using Gaia and have loved the experience of being able to generate a large sized world that really just works.
The features work, and the solution, just works. After some tinkering what you can create is truly amazing. Plus Adam is a wonderful person to work with, and the team is highly response whenever you have a question.
The Gaia toolkit is an amazing set of tools for any large world project. I would highly recommend it.

Even with a high end pc everything takes a long time (spawning a biome in my case takes 30+mins while you can't do anything else). Stamper e.g. have a very limited range so everything needs to be done multiple times for larger terrains.
Maybe this works for procedural generation but trying to handmake a world is an absolute pain.
In the end had to get rid of this since its just a huge timesink to try to do anything.

Hard to comment on your specifics because there is no context. Scene generation in Gaia is GPU-accelerated and fast, with numerous videos to support this claim.
However, if you have a large world, then yes, it is slower. It has to be, as you need to create every single terrain tile, load and unload it for streaming, and so on. Most of this time is spent on scene load/unload, rather than scene generation. The issue is Unity itself, and it's why we made Storm.
As a general comment, if people are experiencing slow performance, it's because something went wrong, and in 99% of cases, when people take the time to ask, we help them achieve success.
This creator is super good no lie it creates a land quick if you want something with hills water beautiful sky tress and rocks. its really hard to make it place it how you want but you can use the terrain tool to erase and add the foliage which is good. i have not many complains from it just need to learn your way around other then that amazing. It is pretty heavy on the comp tho
