Its Festival of bugs, not an asset
Dawid_Matuszewskion version 3.4.1
This is nightmare. It has a lot of bugs. You add something with gaia, delete it from hierarchy and still you got plenty of warnings of non existing gameobjects. Controlling the loading terrain is horrible, fix origin floating points its not working.
I was trying to get support on their official discord, but they generally answered to you with "strange, ignore it". This is not 5$ asset, its very expensive and for that money support need to be better. Going to report this asset to Unity support, because its not usable right now

Thanks for your review.
Contrary to your review, Gaia is not a festival of bugs.
You experienced a specific issue that produced a Unity warning, which we were unable to replicate.
As far as we can tell, this appears to be a Unity bug, and it did not prevent you from using the product. We even suggested that you report it to Unity.
Regarding support, two of our team members made a genuine effort to assist you.
Saves a lot of time. There are bugs, but considering the amount of tools and features its nothing that really slows my work down. After getting used to the issues with the asset you can easy work around the issues. Very powerful asset which saves weeks of development time

Thanks for your review.
All new development is now done on Gaia Pro VS.
Of all the versions of GAIA this is the worst. cost a ton, less features, and more limitations, is buggy, etc. Even with a powerful PC just downloading and importing it will bring anything you wanted to do with your computer to a stop for about half an hour at best. When setting up terrain it could randomly freeze and try to have Unity compile something which will take another hour and even prevents you from closing Unity eve3n through Task Manager.
And fun new bug I just found is after the crash the project wont open anymore

Thanks for your review.
Gaia has about 5gb of assets which is part of what you pay for.
It takes time for Unity to import them. Same goes for any other large asset.
And am curious as to how you think it has less features. Every release gets more features, and support for a range of Unity versions.

This asset costs 265€ and when you import it, it has bugs.
For this amount of money spent, I'd expect the tool, when imported, to at least not have bugs. I am very disappointed and would not recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for your review.
There are a number of reasons why an asset can throw compilation errors, from namespace conflicts with other poorly written assets to weird pipeline-specific conflicts.
We are happily using Gaia Pro 2021 on massive metaverse projects, with zero issues, and zero compilation errors.
If you would like support to get value from the asset you have purchased, please contact us at support@procedural-worlds.com.
When it works, it is ok but it is a bit buggy with minor hickups here and there, and sometimes you just delete it cos it is so full of nonsense you don't wanna deal with it.
The added bells and whistles are cool though with wind generation, ambient audio, etc.

Thanks for your review.
We find Gaia itself highly stable, but we were not happy with some of the add-on code for controllers, lighting, sound, etc. This code is not core and is also fragile when not done precisely as expected.
We refactored this substantially in Gaia Pro 2023 to be simpler, more modular and more explicit. Overall, the next major release of Gaia is a far more robust system.

That's exactly right. Gaia does 85% of the work for you, and allows you to add the magic that makes the magic!
I call it artist driven procedural generation, and IMHO its the most productive way to get a lot of work done fast!
There is not much to say, if you want to quickly create stunning terrains and populate them with ease, this is the asset for you. It is easy to use and can generate whatever terrain you like, fleshing out the world with the customizable spawners in seconds. I can't recommend this enough.

Glad you are enjoying Gaia!
I got this asset in some sale bundle since I was interested in being able to generate populated terrains. At first, it is quite challenging and feels a bit over engineerd, however, there are nice video tutorials that set you in the right path.
The highlight for me is the support though. I had two different issues and after posting them in the forum got daily replies with helpful insight that lead to a solution.

Good asset, bad support
HellraiserGameson version 3.4.1
Let's start with the good things: the asset (when it works) does what is promised. It's a great way to crate a large terrain in a short time. If you use the pre-made biomes, it's just a matter of a few clicks. But the quality of those is not exceptional, so maybe you want to either replace textures and tweak lighting or maybe you want to create your own altogether. I tested with BI and URP, and with those pipelines, Gaia is great.
HOWEVER....
When you start changing things (say, you remove the gaia runtime and re-create it) then things break easily and it's very difficult to find out why. I had to start many times over because of this. And here is the weird fact. With so many evaluations and reviews, I'd expect the Gaia community to be very active. Instead, the forums are deserted and the moderators answer your questions after a day or two, which means you're mostly on your own to figure bugs out.
Lighting-wise, built-in and URP are fine, but HDRP time of day breaks REALISTIC lighting fully and I wasn't able to create an override volume capable of fixing it, with the result I need to buy/create my own weather controller.
So, would I recommend Gaia? I don't know, it depends on your use case:
1) Do you need it for creating big worlds only? Yes
2) Do you are fine with the biome quality out of the box?
3) Do you use built-in or URP pipelines? Yes
4) Do you use HDRP and you want to use the Weather effects built in Gaia? NO
5) Don't you have time to dig into the frequent breaks? NO
6) Do you want to rely on a solid community for help/inspiration? NO
This is my experience after 2 weeks of using gaia every day. I may change this evaluation in the future.

Thanks for the review and for listing the pros and cons of Gaia as you see them!
In Gaia Pro 2023, you will find that many of the issues with the runtime system have been addressed. We have simplified and removed a lot of the old code that had hidden dependencies.
Regarding the notes about support and community:
A reaction time of 24 hours or less from a staff member is stellar for customer support, where the support is included in the purchase price of a cheap asset. Many software companies, including Unity charge a substantial recurring fee per seat for this level of service.
For community interaction, we also offer a Discord here: https://discord.gg/TggjQNN. While users post both on Discord and Canopy, the community is more active on Discord.

Thanks for the positive review and your account of the stability of the application! :)
I love procedurally generating terrain and I believe Procedural Worlds has a solid asset in GAIA. With just a couple of clicks and you can have a fully populated terrain up and running, including a figure or vehicle to move around your world in during runtime. Without writing a single line of code.

Thanks for the positive review, you summed up Gaia well with what you wrote!
Although GAIA still has some shortcomings, I bought it and gave it 5 stars because it is a great asset that can generate complex scenes with just one click. I believe that GAIA will become an irreplaceable and efficient tool for Unity game development in future .
About the areas that need improvement:
1. What are the issues with scene object management or rendering?
I don't know when the crash will occur with the 'D3D11 swap chain...' or memory warning, maybe occur in editor playing, maybe occur in spawning biome, it's very frustrating. I'm using URP, Unity2022.3.4 LTS.
Suggest using ECS+BURST in future versions to improve this issue?
2. Support lag
Gaia's Detail Object can receive shadows in the editor, but it cannot receive shadows on build of Standalone (windows64, URP). I did some testing and it may be a problem with the rendering pipeline. I sent it to Canopy,
Is this an issue that will be fixed in a next version? Or are there other solutions? I haven't received any response.
I hope GAIA can do better in all aspects in future, I love it!

Thanks for the positive review and for the feedback! Regarding your points:
1. ) Please note that the "D3D11 swap chain error" issue is more a general Direct3D / Unity issue that may be triggered by Gaia, but we do not have immediate control over it. In a nutshell, it can happen in unity that processing on the GPU can trigger a timeout detection, the system thinks your GPU is hanging / stalled which then leads to that error appearing in Unity.
You can find some more information about & a potential fix for this issue in the Setup tab of the Gaia Manager. If you do a google search on this issue, you will also find a lot of threads on the unity forum with users experiencing this issue in all kinds of constellations without using Gaia at all.
2.) Please excuse the support lag, it took us some time to try to re-create your constellation in an attempt to reproduce the problem. We were not able to reproduce your issue, but gave some pointers in the support thread on Canopy about how you can further investigate this problem.

The asset is very good, I liked it a lot, it opened up the possibility of creating maps that I didn't think was possible before. But I think some points need to be said. Map optimization for very large terrains is almost nil, you need to study a lot and use Gaia along with other assets for it to work with very large terrains. Another thing that made me upset is the support issue, I speak Portuguese not English, the tutorials are easy to understand, however when asked on discord something about tutorials or any doubts the answer is always "Search on google" or something like that, in one of my doubts the person replied with something generic and continued without answering me.

Professional and powerful tools

thomas_pythonon version 3.4.1
I have their World Building Bundle and these guys are great.
Finally I have a solution that integrates all the tools very well. I don't have to worry about world streaming like Gaia does for me. And when I use GeNa, the prefabs are spawned on the right terrain.
Yes, it takes some time to learn the toolset. But it is a lot less work than learning multiple tools for every single world-building action you want to do.
You can start very quickly by just creating a world. But it will take some time if you want to customise your world. But the overall time saving is amazing (take your time and learn about the spawners). As a single developer, I couldn't have created such a detailed and amazing world with such ease.
The support is great, friendly and fast. Just remember to visit their forum :-)
Thanks for these great tools!

Two stars off of otherwise a solid 5. I contacted them with questions in the past (had issues with rivers), did not receive any constructive resolutions. Contacted them recently due to Gaia Pro crashes under 2022.3, they did not bother to answer at all. You can have a gem of an asset, but without proper customer support, its future is dark. Especially for a complex asset like this one.

Good tools. Initial issues with Canopy website resolved.
librianzhangon previous version 3.3.7
I am an architect and also teach in an architecture school. I purchased Gaia Pro 2021 during this Unity Summer Sale to study the possibility of involving it in my Fall semster course on digital built/natural environment making. Along with additional support from the Canopy website, there could be great potentials.
After some test use and customisation I think Gaia Pro (together with Gena Pro, which I then purchased) does what it advertises to do. It provides a very good set of tools, albeit with a few quirks and bugs on Unity 2021.3 LTS. The highly customisable procedural tools are their strength (stamps and spawners in particular). The visual style of the embedded post-process, camera and player runtimes might not be the most desirable to architects though. Oily, over saturated color schemes might not be the most helpful for the spatial experience of an urban or a natural environment. Skipping these runtimes is more prone to errors in compilation and build.
While I met some initial difficulties in getting support from the Canopy website, it has been resolved after the weekend. With the assistance from the team at Procedure World, I come to the the realisation that my initial difficulties might be the resulf of a number of combined misunderstandings and could be an isolated user case.
To wrap up, Gaia Pro (possibly with Gena Pro) gives a very good set of tools for terrain making. Although some visual tweaks/customisation might be needed for architects and urbanists, it has promising potentials in architecture and urban study applications.

We genuinely appreciate your feedback as an Architect and Canopy user.
We are reviewing our onboarding and support processes at the moment and considering what needs to change for Gaia Pro 2023.
We cannot message you via Unity, but we would love to talk to you to get your feedback and suggestions directly.
Please message us at https://www.procedural-worlds.com/about/contact-us/, and we will contact you.
I have had Gaia Pro 2021 for nearly two years now. I see it gets updates every so often, which I assume are improvements and/or bug fixes. My experience with this asset has been quite frustrating. The number of times Unity crashes whilst using this asset are numerous. There always seems to be something that prevents a productive workflow. In its latest guise, the Gaia Player doesn't work properly (the movement controls are totally unresponsive at run time) and the Water script complains there is no player or that there is no camera assigned. After all this time, you would think silly little bugs like this would not occur. There may be many tutorial type articles written by various people over on Canopy, but there doesn't seem to be a proper PDF instruction manual with up-to-date screenshots and references. There is a discord channel but you can't get support there. Instead you are directed to Canopy, but hey, there's no support section there either. It seems support relies on their user forum where people may or may not get answers to their problems. It's a big beast of an asset prone to crash Unity, it suffers from many annoying glitches, has less than up-to-date documentation and a lack of dedicated support. The link to generate a support ticket from within the asset gives you a web page screen that tells you the link doesn't exist. Considering how expensive it is, to say its a great disappointment is an understatement. I had high hopes when I first purchased it, but its proven to be one of those assets that is too convoluted for its own good.

Thanks for your review.
Quite a bit to unpack there, as you have certainly gone to town.
1. Gaia has been actively supported since you bought it two years ago. It's been actively supported since it was first released in 2015. I see this as a positive.
2. I get crashes on my machine with Unity whether I use Gaia or not. Unity is full of bugs that cause it to crash - just read their release notes. Gaia pushes Unity hard, but I do not believe it causes crashes, or I would always see them. I don't.
3. Gaia Player does work properly - if you set it up correctly. You did ask about this on Canopy, and we responded within 2 HOURS. I would describe this as excellent support, which is the opposite of the lousy support you claim in your review.
4. Discord is TERRIBLE for detailed technical support! Many of our support questions are nothing to do with our products. If we answer them on Discord, then the answer is gone as soon as the screen scrolls up, and we have had many, many instances of people asking the same question 2 lines after the previous same question was answered. This does not work for us or our customers.
The reason Canopy exists is because the content is openly accessible to anyone, it can contain threads that are several pages long as we track into issues, and so that it can be searched. I would rather search a forum and get instant answers to my problem than wait for a support person. It's also a great way to learn from other people.
5. We have a library full of written and video content on Canopy and a forum full of answers to the myriad of different ways people use our products. Writing yet another form of document is just overkill that would then have to be maintained.
We are always looking to improve, however, and will be exploring the concept of training AI based bots to answer questions in the relatively near future.

It pretty much does everything as advertised, and very well at that. The ability to import real heightmaps is a great feature. Scene development using tools like this is a great way to express creativity and is an art. So it requires patience and time to learn the techniques necessary to use it fully.
If you need to save a bit to afford the asset, it is very much worth the effort to learn the *manual* process of creating terrain from the ground up so to speak. The lessons learned will be readily applied to any Gaia generated terrain.

Thanks for the positive review!
The control areas that you mention could be achieved in two ways:
1. When you move a spawner or a biome to a certain area, it is possible to spawn in a local area only. On the spawner, this is done with the "Spawn Local" button, on the biome controller there is a Area dropdown on the list of spawners where you can switch between "World" and "Local". When doing a local spawn, only the area within the range of the tool will be processed.
2. It is possible to set up a mask in world space so that a biome / a spawner will only work in certain parts of the world. Please see the info about "Local vs World space" in the documentation about masks:
https://canopy.procedural-worlds.com/library/tools/gaia-pro-2021/written-articles/populating_your_world/3-introduction-to-masks-r50/
When you then spawn across the entire world, the spawn should be much faster because areas that are outside of the mask will be processed faster during spawning.
Was really helpful for building and splitting the terrain for the terrain streaming system which saves a lot of memory.
The stamp system and texture painting is great, however I suggest to get rid of the previews and implement a real time, live updates of them. It makes the flow much easier.
Great product and support!

Very unstable but cool when it works
GenesisRaphsodoson previous version 3.3.5
Installed on fresh new project on unity 2021 version. Gaia and gena are the only tow things installed on the project and it is constantly crashing on just about every function. Even so much as deleting a game object from the scene.
since unity doesn't auto save scenes it makes this almost unusable as I then have to either remember to hit save on EVERY little thing or start over when it crashes.
It is cool for what it does just way too unstable.
also the tutorials are a bit annoying. The getting started tutorials feel more like tutorials on how to use unity instead of how to use the tool. The entire first video was just explaining unity concepts. The second video has been more of the same. Some might not find that annoying but for advanced unity devs it's a time consuming process when a video may be 25 mins and you don't know where to skip to. And then the fear that if you do skip sections they may mention one specific thing about their product that you then miss so you are kind of forced to sit through basic unity tutorials like "what is a unity project" and stuff.
Editing: Revising my original review. All of a sudden gaia has become stable. No crashes or anything in my current project. Only difference is some windows updates have happened. So chances are whatever was causing my crashes before was windows related.
But now that it works reliably asset is great. Easy to use and is helping me get the terrain for my project set up with different style to see what I like best in no time at all.

Thanks for your review.
Gaia is very stable for us, and therefore should be very stable for you, especially on an LTS version of Unity.
The fact that you are getting crashes seems to indicate something is weird in your setup workflow or on your PC itself. This could be as obscure as just making sure your graphics drivers are up to date, as Gaia does a lot of its generation on the GPU. Please lodge a support request on Canopy, and we will see if we can help you.
WRT your comment on tutorials, this is a catch-22 situation for us. We get a lot of users that love the slower pacing, as they are new to Unity, and then we also have more advanced users.
Then, because Gaia is a very powerful tool and can be used in many ways, people ask us for videos of all the potential edge cases - which of course, is not feasible for us to do.
You can see an overview of both the written and the video tutorials here: https://canopy.procedural-worlds.com/library/tools/gaia-pro-2021/
EDIT: Thanks for updating your review after you got better results out of it! These stability issues are unfortunately very difficult for us to catch, as every system configuration is different.

Thanks for the review.
Please note that you can add more stamps after the world designer. Please open the Gaia Manager, go to the "Advanced" tab and under "Gaia Tools" there is a button to add an additional Stamper to the scene. This stamper then can be used on the Terrain(s) you initially generated from the World Designer to edit them further and add additional features like another mountain etc.
It is correct that Gaia is a design-time tool - it uses features of the unity editor that are not available in a standalone build.
If you are stuck with any other issues please post them in the forum on our community site Canopy where we can assist you better. https://canopy.procedural-worlds.com/
EDIT: Thanks for updating the review! If you have any more issues or feedback, please feel free to create a post on Canopy so we can take a look.
A really powerful tool which saves TONS and TONS of time and on top of that it's easy to use.
I was able to build a scene in no time that would normally take weeks/months of work.
This is one of my top favorite asset in the asset store.

Having playing with gaia couple months i can say its a very good terrain generator it will save you toooooons of time but also it will make you wanted to delete it completely and forget it for good, frustration over constant crashes can rocketed sky high. I'm very patient hence it is still on my drive. I own over 500 assets and non of them give me so much brakes waiting to reboot whole system than gaia. Thank You :))
I've tested on 2022 all subversions same constant state when generating preview it stalls my pc 30% cpu 95% memory over halve an hour than manual reboot cant even reproduce any error.
I've tested on 2021 all subversions 80% of the time crash on generating preview
I've tested on 2020 and... what a surprise all working just fine not a single crash not even yellow warning.
Well I will stick to 2020 for now and export outcomes to different versions, hopefully it will be stable in future.
To the developers keep the good job going but make it more stable please.
I will ad fifth star when it will work on 2022 with no crash at least once per generated terrain.

Please report the crashes / stability issues on our support platform Canopy:
https://canopy.procedural-worlds.com/. We are currently not aware of general stability issues like you described here. If you can attach the unity editor logfile from after the crash to your post, we have a chance to look into and potentially resolve this issue for you & future users as well.
I've been working with Gaia for a few months and it has some really cool features that work well but if I knew what I know now, I'd probably use a different solution. The features are often very buggy. Things need to be done VERY specifically or everything breaks. To make matters worse, there's very slow support. They have a discord but you can only ask questions on their forum. It can take days to even get a response.

Thanks for your feedback.
We take bugs and quality issues seriously, and anything you put on our forums will be read and responded to.
The benefit of our Canopy forums, compared to Discord, is that you get a steadily growing body of content that can easily be searched (often allowing you to resolve your issue without us), and it also means that questions do not get lost. By comparison, as soon as something asked in discord scrolls off the screen, it is gone, and there is none of the power of a forum-based search.
I think how quickly your questions get answered is down to the time of the week and our workload. We have a dedicated support person, and they take weekends off like everyone else. There have been a bunch of sales recently, and it can take a little longer when we are under load.
We would be happy to offer priority support if the community wants it, but my sense is that most people would not be prepared to pay. I am totally open to hiring more if we can make the books balance.
You are welcome to DM me (Adam) on our discord with your issues and I will be happy to follow up with the team.
Installed the asset in my project which took for ever. Then tried to create a terrain and my project just froze. Had to manually terminate unity and then I immediately uninstalled. May try again in a clean project when I have time but this asset seems to be a resource hog.

Gaia Pro 2021 comes with many sample assets, which take time to import. I find the slow Unity import process tedious as well, but it is a one-off process, and once it is done, you then have the benefit of having lots of sample assets to use in your project. Most people are happy to wait a few extra minutes because of this. Go grab a coffee!
Unfortunately, Unity crashes happen often, and I get them regularly in projects that don't have Gaia as well. A quick search on the Unity release notes will give you a sense of just how many crashing issues Unity have. Your best bet is to use the 2021 LTS versions of Unity if you want a more stable experience. Anything that is not an LTS version is considered a 'technical preview' by Unity.

Guys_with_an_Ideaon previous version 3.3.0
Being an Award winning, 5 Star rated asset with thousands of satisfied customers raised expectations.
These are the three aspects where the asset failed to meet expectations the most:
1) It cannot create Terrain at runtime. This was confirmed by a request to support. To us that was an absolute showstopper. Would have been good to know, before purchase.
2) The tool only supports equal width and height maps. So if you want a 2 by 1 map, you need to make a 4 by 4 map and cut the top and bottom rows. The random terrain generator does not support this, so you have to use your own height map for that, completely defeating the purpose of having a procedural height map generator in the first place.
3) I got 50+ assets from the store, and no other crashes as often as Gaia. Gaia crashes typically made the project unusable so I had to start from scratch. Supports opinion on that: Unity issue that we cannot fix.
So bottom line: Can’t create procedural worlds at runtime, really hard to get what you want and way to unstable.

Thanks for the review, we would like to address the points you brought up:
1) It is correct that Gaia does NOT do runtime generation. We also do not advertise it as doing runtime generation. It makes heavy use of features and functionalities of the Unity Editor which are not present in a standalone build.
2) It is NOT correct that Gaia only supports equal width and height maps. The World Generator (which is only one way of creating a heightmap) only supports the generation of square worlds for technical reasons, but you can easily strip off the unwanted terrains after the initial heightmap generation process, and continue working with Gaia afterwards on your non-square worlds. If you chose the stamper approach to generate your heightmaps, you can also start working on a non-square world directly.
3) It is difficult to comment on the crashes without having the full background. We use Gaia in most of our projects for external customers without any stability issues. Please reach out to support again as we would refund your purchase if we can not resolve your issues.
The asses is extremely difficult to learn, and the tutorials available are outdated and poorly explained, so you will struggle. All examples are pre-made, so you must learn a lot before you begin. Make a backup of your project because it will break a lot.
You gonna make maps but this maps are not good to play on it, only to look
Mostly problems you have to figure it out for yourself.

Thanks for the review.
We respectfully disagree - the recent tutorial series on how to create a biome with Gaia covers the core usage of the product and goes into fully customizing your settings - the tutorial video series can be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F6YJ-pbdsY
The sample biomes are pre-made configurations for environments that you can spawn in with a click, we do not see that as a negative? You can still fully customize them to your needs or start from scratch if need be.
The maps you can make with Gaia are mostly limited by your imagination or by the capabilities of the Unity Engine.
If you run into any problems you are not left to fend for yourself, but you can contact us in our support forums at https://canopy.procedural-worlds.com/ where we will help you with your issues.

I would describe Gaia as essentially Substance Painter for terrains. You use the tool to create a terrain layout and then use procedural methods to apply textures and prefabs. Right out of the box the tool does exactly what is advertised. I have been using Gaia for a few days and have created several decent looking maps. Gaia reduces the amount of time it takes to create AAA terrain from days or weeks down to minutes. Believe the hype, believe the reviews, the awards are justified. Combine Gaia with high quality, realistic assets from Megascans or NatureManufacture and prepare to see some amazing results.

Thank you for your kind words!
Your review was the first thing I read today as I sat down to start work, and it made my day.
Good luck with your project!
I'm a Software Engineer. I worked in the industry since 1973, initially designing graphics hardware. I started learning Unity because I love playing MMORPG's and wanted to create one for myself. My first MMOG was Lineage 2 in 2005 and I used to love drinking in the atmosphere, as I chilled out over a bottle of fermented grape juice, after a stressful day fixing bugs in dealer trader software. I'm not an artist, I'm an Engineer, and Gaia enables me to create a near infinite series of beautiful worlds for my games. For my first attempt I created an island, using the provided forest biome and then wandered round it using the Gaia provided game character. I wandered up a mountain and sat on the peak as it started snowing, with the wind gently buffeting , as the snow settled on the trees. It is easy to create game variants for mobile/desktop/high end AAA. This package is expensive, but only if you don't value your time. It gives me God-like powers - In the beginning there was but one sole self, no eye winked, then it thought ' let me create the worlds!' There is a fairly steep learning curve to master the package but the tutorials are really good and demonstrate the workflow necessary to produce good results.

Gaia is a useful asset to procedurally generate a good scene in a few minutes, but If you want to add your own features to the terrain it can be extremely counterintuitive and unpredictable, drastically slowing down the workflow and making you loose control of the project. It is extremely demanding in terms of computer resources, so unless you have a last generation computer you won't be able to create complex scenes and risk to loose your project if you try to do it. Gaia is particularly unsuitable for individual indie developers, since the company behind it now requires expensive monthly subscriptions to access additional content. There are cheaper tools in the asset store that are simpler to use and give better results, while at the same time let you keep full control of your project.

Thanks for your review.
Gaia gives you full control over the process of world generation, or it can do it for you, as you prefer.
We have gone to considerable effort to make it as intuitive as possible, even adding real time previews in the stamper before shaping the terrain. You can learn how to do this via the tutorials and articles in the library section on Canopy.
You are also welcome to share your experience there so that we can explore and perhaps improve either your work flow, or the product itself based on your feedback.
Your comment about our lack of support for indies is inaccurate. You can get our assets either here or via subscription on Canopy, and the choice is 100% yours.
The reality is that a subscription of $39 per month is far cheaper than the asset store, as it gives you access to all of our assets for a fraction of their purchase price here.
Regardless of which choice you make, support is 100% free via Canopy.

Gaia is able to generate great-looking terrains on the fly and their stamps are amazing as well.
However, the best part about Gaia for me is that I don't have to paint textures by hand anymore. Gaia does it all for me, and with a level of quality that is superb.

I sent an email to support@proceduralworlds.freshdesk.com, but my email was rejected. then I tried to registered an account in the website https://canopy.procedural-worlds.com/, but I was refused once again, it says: You are not permitted to register a user account with this site.
Then I tried to contact via discord, failed again.
So I have to post my question here:
When starting rain in runtime, the rain effect will show when the main camera look at some angles, but rain effect will disappear at some other angles. I made some check, and found it's the problem of "PW_VFX_Rain" Mesh.
The mesh is single-side, which can be only be rendered when camera is looking it from outside. While, if the camera look it form inside of the mesh, the rain effect disappear. So I wonder whether you could provide a 2-side "PW_VFX_Rain" Mesh to solve this problem or do you have a better solution?
(fyi. When creating runtime through GaiaManager, I choose "custom" player control, it's a third-person-control.)

Hi, thanks for the review! Sorry that you had such a hard time reaching out to us - the correct way would be via canopy, the only reason to be blocked there would be if the system identifies you as a bot via a hidden reCaptcha - if you have anything enabled / disabled in your browser that might prevent reCaptcha, this might cause the issue.
Can you please send me an email directly at peter "at" procedural-worlds "dot" com so I can help you get your account set up in canopy for future support requests?
Regarding your request: If you look at the position of the "PW_VFX_Rain" Mesh during runtime (try enabling wireframe view in scene view so that you can see the mesh) you can see that the mesh always moves with the camera position, so the camera should always be in the center of the "tubes" of the mesh, looking outward. We should be able to provide you with a double sided version of the mesh, but I think it might not help much: I think this has more to do with how the shader for the rain vfx was written, it increases the visibility of the rain effect when you look against the sunlight.
In any case please try to send me a direct email and I can help you get setup in Canopy and see what we can do to resolve this issue for you.

Thanks for the positive review! Glad you encourage other users to look into learning the tool, while you can great results with the defaults you will get even better ones when learning the tool and customizing the spawners etc. for the needs of your current project.
Having problems such as when Modify fog disabled and modify Post Processing Disabled everywhere but still deletes my post processing layer and changes fog. Had to go through the source code manually as support never responded on their website forum.
EDIT: I looked back at the review and I have to admit I was blinded by frustration. The tool itself is beyond amazing and will dramatically help artists crafting their world. I wish the Runtime modules are more modular for developers that may want to customize, such as using parts of the Gaia system (dynamic time of day), runtime water, etc. For more experience users, you may need to look through the code (pretty well commented) and make modifications to suit your direct needs, but in general, the asset does a good job of creating a beautiful scene very quickly.

We go to a lot of effort to provide access to a searchable forum full of information, and we have a dedicated full-time support person, which is rare across the entire publisher ecosystem.
There is a change however that your support request has fallen through the cracks. Please ensure that you post your support request in the Gaia forum on Canopy:

EDIT:
Thanks for adapting the review after contacting us via Canopy! The modularity os something we want to improve in further iterations of Gaia, in general we plan it to make it so that things like lighting, water etc. are things that can be activated independently of the core terrain editor.

Hi, thanks for the positive review! Could you please post which tutorial video you mean? To my knowledge the subtitle translations should be generated automatically after the upload. As far as I know we do not adjust anything in youtube that would prevent the auto translate, but if you can tell us the video here (or on canopy https://canopy.procedural-worlds.com/ ideally) then we can double check to see if there is something we can do.
The tool is amazing but to really get the benefit I suggest subscribing instead of buying it outright. If you subscribe you get access to many stamps, textures, updates, features and more than you get through purchasing.

Thanks for the review! Buying from the asset store and the subscription on the Canopy page are two different models to get Gaia:
When purchasing from the asset store you have a one-time payment that includes product updates and support within the current product lifecycle (see "Update policy" in the asset store description).
When subscribing on canopy you have a (smaller) monthly payment for that you get access to the newest versions of multiple procedural worlds tools and bonus content, but you will only get updates and support while the subscription is active.
Users can pick between the two models and choose the one that is more appealing to them.
If you want to make game map or video, this product is the best and fast to use, the support "like discord " or other is the best i have find ! Continue this super work ! Like it!!!

Hi, thanks for the review! The water system in Gaia is currently intended as a global "ocean water", if you want to create additional bodies of water it is possible, but it requires manual setup in the scene and you would need to extend the detection for when the camera is underwater to display underwater FX.
You can read more about it here in this comment on Canopy:
https://canopy.procedural-worlds.com/forums/topic/252-weird-pixelated-textures-on-terrain/?do=findComment&comment=1148&_rid=13
We plan to improve this in the future so that it becomes easier to set up multiple independent bodies of water.
If you've been looking for a world creation tool like me and you find this...go with it, your world is just a few clicks away!!
Yea "clicks away" because even the random examples from the tutorials are so good I didn't even have to go through the advanced settings.

Hi, thanks for the review! Please make a backup before trying, but normally your terrain file will not be destroyed when you delete the Gaia folder - all relevant data for your scenes you created is stored in the "Gaia User Data" folder. This allows you to delete the Gaia installation folder, and the scene / terrain data will be kept intact.

But..
it has gimmicks. You must strictly play by "her" rules. otherwise "she" makes your life very very hard.
if you follow "her" rules, it is really a pleasure to work with. remember. "her" rules. not yours.
and do not update terrain. "she" gets really pissed when you update terrain.

Hi, thanks for the kind review! Gaia Pro has a lot of stuff built in already for terrain creation, so it depends on your own taste if you say you need those additional assets. If you for example do not like the sky in Gaia Pro, you can decide to turn the sky / lighting off, and then use the Enviro asset for the sky / lighting instead alongside Gaia. The same goes for the other assets. If this does not answer your question, please send us a ticket in our support system here:

Great for simple starter terrains, runtime systems intrusive and destructive
4 years ago
mroshawon previous version 3.3.5
I did initially love Gaia, but have come to realise that I've spent more time fighting its intrusive runtime systems, than actually using it to create worlds.
The editor tools are really good, spawning terrains quickly and with great results. I'll often have to redo whole terrains and biomes, seems there's always an issue with texture references causing spawn masks to become disabled. It's aged and there are now better tools on the store, for significantly less cash.
Support have abandoned their previously active Discord in favour of a forum system that frequently sees questions unanswered.

Yeap a lot of work went into it! We have another massive update landing soon as well.. you can expect to see between 2x - 100x performance increase on vegetation rendering !!
This asset is pure happiness!!!
After having Gaia 2021 for only 6 days I went straight ahead to the shop and bought Gaia 2021 Pro!
And it wasn't because I felt like the regular version was a "demo" or something - but because it was simply AMAZING and such a powerful tool!!
After getting the pro version I couldn't believe what I was "creating" with just few clicks and tweaks.
These guys deserve a medal.

The amount of time and effort I saved just by learning fast how to tweak Gaia is huge and it is just super fun!!

I read the reactions of people who gave one star and felt it was just a shame that instead of sorting out their issues with the company which personally gave an answer to every question I had and helped beyond that in the community which numbered several thousand people happy with this amazing product, including seeing cases of people receiving Free upgrade from previous versions and I thought these few reviews were just meant to hurt people who worked hard on something good and move on. If someone wants to develop a product he should also know how to deal with glitches and test himself first instead of throwing his frustration at people who have developed an amazing product, or alternatively sort out the issues with the company and not just give a bad score on an amazing product that thousands are happy with and leave.

Thanks for your review :)
Yes I must admit that it does frustrate me when people shoot first and ask questions later.
We work hard to deliver quality software that just works across a range of Unity versions and pipeline and while some reviews are fair, the majority of the 1*'s are usually from self inflicted wounds, which could have been avoided if the user in question had reached out to support.
To counter this, it makes my day every single time when some takes the time to share how we have helped them on their journey :)
It`s a wonderful terrain tool for speech up my terrain scene.
If it is more flexible like world creator maybe more better.

sbmidhun95on previous version 3.0.1
I imported Gaia Pro 2021 and it shows 16 errors like "error CS0234: The type or namespace name 'TerrainAPI' deos not exist"
And also I couldn't find my e-receipt in my gmail.

Thanks for your review.
Gaia does not throw errors, but there is certainly a chance that you have a conflicting package installed in your project.
If you would like help then please raise a service ticket at https://www.procedural-worlds.com/support/.
It is really easy to replace "Ethan" with your own rigged models, and use the included character movement and animations scripts. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Yep we provide a bunch of handy runtime automation, but there is no need to use it if you don't want to.

Adam is the Hugh Jackman of asset publishers

jeremyinteractiveon previous version 3.0.1
It's easy to spend a fortune on terrain systems and watch endless hours of tutorials with broken English (at best), and get no where. Every time this yank deviates from Adam's assets and tries a competitor, I waste time and money. Adam is truely an Australian national treasure. Look no further for your terrain needs.
P.S.
Jokes aside, this asset will take your breath away.
