1) Billboard systems don't take top tree view.
2) Tree lod/billboard doesn't work without using the alttree paint system.
3) The paint system it's too basic.
4) The whole script code it's a mess and documentations is very very poor.
In my case i have a personal tool that spawn trees, by texture, random, at runtime. And after found a nice billboard generator like this and spent hours to modify the code to make it works even out of the alttree paint system i gave up and realise that i lost about 16 euros.
Keep in mind that a game developer wants flexibility from a payed asset, in this case:
1) After generating a tree, i want to use it "stand-alone" and place wherever i want, with a third party spawn tool, by hand or just drag and drop from folder to scene.
2) A good paint system must have a runtime spawn option, with much more personalization like "hit normal rotation", texture control etc. etc.
3) usually a tree can be viewed even from above.. and it's necessary this snapshot in the atlas.

I'm not a bright fellow and I had it up and running within a few minutes. The documentation is very good and gets to the point. Excellent and easy to use, massive performance boost -AND- the most important part, my non-speedtrees finally work with fog :)

This system is great at face value but it just doesn't work like it should. The tree's often have visual artifacts, the performance you are saving from drawing billboards instead of meshes is null because the Update() code is rather heavy performance wise, and the asset hasn't been updated in a long time despite the authors words. The asset isn't completely useless but there are much better alternative's on the store right now.
PS: There seems to be a bug with this system that will completely stop your game from working, it seems to be related to the system not cleaning itself up properly after changing scenes and therefore creating some problems the longer the game is running.

Out of the box it doesn't work with Unity 2017, and the code is severely undocumented

Over 14k lines of code, without comments. Yuck. Variable names are usually fine, but sometimes you can find stuff like "int sch" - it's about as clear as "int myInt", even with context. I spent about a day and a half to understand how it works, after fixing most issues I was finally able to implement a few features(like multi object editing, mass changing something like hue\cull distance\etc should be possible by default) but frankly if I knew how long it will take I wouldn't even consider this asset. I bought it earlier this year, then it worked fine(on Unity 5.3), if you don't plan to update to above 5.6 add another star to my review(it's definitely have issues even then though, multi object editing is a must imho, the tree placer is extremely basic without any fine controls(also lacks undo support), but if you already have a way to place your trees and only plan to use this system to actually draw your speedtree trees then it might worth a shot). Also keep in mind the last update came out 4 months ago, and it's uncertain when(if at all) development will continue.

Very Easy to try out and use. It works!

It works on meshes! Thank YOU, as my terrain is a mesh! I just love all the simple video tutorials! It's so easy to setup, and easy to start placing tress. And they look so good! And the frame rate doesn't drop! For the performance, this is a must have. I also think the included tool is nice for placing trees.
I like all the settings: debug, pool, shadow, ect. nicely organized. I like how you can just click create new trees, and it contains all the trees in that object so that it functions like a layer. Then you can mass remove/change stuff in just that layer without effect the other trees or objects. Still need to be able to place more than one type of different thing at a time. (I wish you could hold Ctrl to select multiple objects to be placed)
I love how you can edit the trees, and how it places them with good controllable randomness.
It's still in beta...but it works flawlessly, and the only features I'd really like to see, are:
I'd like to be able to use features that are in Easy Scatter, in which you can select multiple different plants/rocks within all the possible plants, and then scatter them within groups in which it remembers the palette of specific plants you used. I'd also like a spline placement brush with this.
So yeah, the ability to add/remove layers/groups, use multiple selection of plants. It makes it so much easier to organize and change things. And a spline placement brush. Those two things would be AMAZING if you could add them.
I hope the focus isn't just on trees, but on all mass object placement.
(first day review - it's great)
Second day, had to lower a star for not quite as good of billboards as I had wanted. When I went straight high up, the trees billboards were so flat I'd see right through them to the ground. There was no horizontal top down billboard. Anyhow, for 15 it's great, but for 15 I'm also going to be trying out LushLOD Trees.

Should be standard in Unity

Features like random Y-rotation or the fact that billboards render correctly in VR make this a must buy. Get it while it's cheap as the author is adding a whole lot more.
