Seems outdated

Urgent review to help people who are thinking of buying this asset on sale. The first feeling is that the asset is outdated. I expected more demo scenes, like in a store. The web demo has not worked for many years. The site has not been updated since 2015, which is very scary. I expected more. I have experience working with assets that have been supported for 8+ years and there are no such problems. It’s scary that there are no new reviews, but the asset is being updated, which is a big plus. While I’m studying the documentation and watching videos that are 11 years old. I will update the review as I get to know it, but for now 3 stars, which is not bad.

Thank you for the purchase and the review. The videos and docs have not been updated as there is no point, nothing has changed in the functionality of the asset and the videos and docs are correct for the asset as it explains and shows what it does. The asset though is updated to keep it working with all major releases of Unity. Chris

I bought this in 2012 and still use it a lot, as it is the best in the asset store, no doubt about it. Also, a big shout-out to Chris West, the author: Since 2012, I only needed some pointers today (2023), and Chris' responsiveness was extraordinary: prompt and on point. Let me stress that this is so good that in 11 years of using it, I only needed some pointers today!

Powerfull but needs video tutorials updated

This is something that has many features and works well, when you have it working. I am running into property adjustments not covered in the videos result in me breaking functionality some how. It would be much easier to understand why doing certain actions does not give the result you want by understand more of what each property does and more in depth of things you might get stuck on when trying to build a track/loft using the splines and curves.

Hi There Thank you for the review and the purchase. Please check the web page help for the Loft Object component and you will see it has a 'Limits' section where you can set the various resolution of values in the inspector, this is to make sure the Sliders in the inspector use appropiate values for the size of the lofts you are dealing with. The defaults work fine for most cases but if you have very large or veryt small lofts you may need to adjust the limit values accordingly. It is explain on the help page which can be visited directly from Unity by right clicking any MegaShapes Inspector Component title bar and clicking 'Help' a browser window will show all the values and explain what each does. Documentation and API is pretty scarce, I've spent 3 days to get to a point where I can assess whether tool is fit for the current proto or not, while using curvy or dreamtech splines I did that in a day. (I've made more than 70 prototypes professionally in HC industry ) Made me pretty frustrated in the end, and I had to drop this package. In favor of Dreamtech splines. Support I can safely say is terrible, as it requires you to send invoice to prove you bought the package, that step alone cut them of one star in review. I understand this fully, but more hoops to cross worse experience... Documentation did another one. All in all not getting back to this one...

Hi There Thank you for the review. I've looked back through the support requests and can't find anything that has not been dealt with. I am sorry if you didn't find what you needed but you can always just send me an email for quick help, and including an invoice number in your first support request is not too much to ask to make sure that time spent on providing support actually goes to customers who have paid for the asset. Documentation & demo scenes not helpful

The documentation is out-of-date videos that are exceptionally hard to follow because enough little details have changed that you can't do what it's telling you how it's telling you, and because there's no audio it's like solving a murder mystery to make sure you catch every little thing being done. Half the demo scenes don't work out of the box (full of missing objects & scripts), and the ones that do work are impenetrable. There's no clue what's supposed to happen without inspecting every script to see what's meant to happen or what keys you're supposed to press. Nightmare. Buyer beware.

Hi There Thank you for the purchase and the review. The only errors I can see are about GUI Layer is no longer used, that will be fixed in the next update. If you could maybe submit a support ticket with the scenes you are having problems with I can look into it, I have gone through them and they all seem to work just fine, if you could submit a ticket and let me know which version of Unity you are using so I can test with that that would be helpful. I do not see any missing objects or missing scripts which you say you are seeing and not had any other reports of such issues. If you need any help with how anything works then we have a support ticket system where you can get any help you need. Each part of the system does have a web page to explain all the params, and each part usually has a video showing its use. If you right click the Inpsector bar for the various MegaShapes components and then click 'Help' you will be taken to the help page for that system. Chris

Has features that other spline tools lack, + great support!

I own Dreamteck, Curvy, and Megafiers (Megashapes and Megascatter). They all have their own strengths and features, but the Megafiers approach permitted me to export Blender curves as ***3D*** shapes (rather than as 2D / SVG) that I could pull into Unity. With other packages, I was limited to flat curves -- which require a lot of work if you're exporting terrain features (roads, paths, islands) from Blender. Support is excellent also, and stands the test of time: five years ago, Chris solved a problem for me within just a day or so, and he just did the same thing again today (in 2022) -- answering super-quick with clear instructions and explanations. He even provided me with the Blender bezier-export plugin for Unity, and wrote another quick script that I needed for cross-compatibility with another package. I'm hoping to get the new Megafiers version . . . someday - even though I may not really need it; Chris's work is just that good!

Version 2.37 Fixed an issue with Unity 2020 where knots on splines could not be dragged Unity version - 2020.2.1 - same problem - fix doesn't work. Compile issue after import - Assets\Mega-Fiers\Scripts\MegaGrab\DOFCamera.cs(13,9): error CS0723: Cannot declare a variable of static type 'Random' UPDATE - fix works, but not very clearly. Please update tutorial videos about it. Thanks. Compile issue not fixed

Poor example

The contained example scenes don't indicate that each scene intends to explain what it means. those are too poor. I think that in order to reproduce the result of each functionality, it should contain demo scene which is used as pre-purchase video. but it did not contain scene which is used as pre description. it is not fair. There is very simple comparison point, it is the number of example. You can find the number of examples of this asset is fewer than other competitive assets in spite of the number of functionality author claims. I don't recommend this asset to who require instant solution.

Hi There Thank you for the purchase and your review. Though a bit confused when you say when you say it should include demo scenes that are used for videos. The asset includes the example scenes used in our videos. The scenes included are: Car Path - Shows the use of MegaShapes to control a Rigidbody car driving along a spline Draw Spline - Shows the runtime drawing of splines and lofts Potters Wheel - Shows the use of the Spline Lathe system Race Track - Complex Loft use and interaction with Terrains through conform system RBody Path - Showing a rigidbody being controlled by a spline Rope Scene - Showing the rope system well as the tracked vehicle system Test Scene - A scene showing all the different loft layer types together Train Set - Showing the Train controller and train track system Tutorial - Simple Loft scene Tutorial 1 - More advanced loft scene showing object placement system So there are 10 different demo scenes showing off all functionality of the asset, if you think there is something missing then please just ask and I will add it but I think the above pretty much covers it? Chris

Tutorial is outdated, not easy to use

It looks like it would be good. But all the tutorials are 5 years old and nothing is the same the new version. I would guess the developers are cashing in and building something new.

Thank you for your review, some of the tutorial videos are old yes, the latest one only being 9 months ago not 5 years, but nothing has changed in MegaShapes that in anyway makes them invalid, a few new features have been added but the functionality is the same and the inspector layouts are the same, so can I ask what is it that is not the same. I seems a bit harsh to give an asset 1 star because some new features that have been requested by users have been added, if you find something hard to follow then please ask for help and I will gladly do a new video showing whatever it is that is confusing you. Usually people ask for help and guidance, or visit the website for help before deciding the asset is only 1 star, I have not had any emails from asking for help, or any forum posts, it might be nice to give me a chance to help first maybe? As for cashing in that it just nonsense, we were asked by Unity to put our assets in the sale we did not request it, we have updated all our assets for well over 5 years in and all that time we have never released version 2 etc as paid upgrades, all new features and improvements have been added to the original version so all our users can benefit.
