Might not have been the best choice.

Let me start off by saying that I fully intend on retracting this review if my opinion on this asset changes. I do not *fully* regret buying it, but I believe that for my usecase, it was equivalent to shooting myself in the foot, with birdshot. As an university assignment worth 100% of my grade from 2 subjects, I have to develop a game. This game would feature a lot of dialogue. I have approximately 11 days to finish this project. I could not have started earlier, as I had to work on other projects. I had the unique problem of an extreme time constraint that wouldn't allow me to develop a dialogue system of my own, so I decided to just purchase one as a solution. This asset (which, by the way, costs as much as 40% of my monthly rent) was not a solution, but in fact several more miscellaneous problems in a trench coat. The setup is near impossible to do out of the box due to how incomprehensibly vast this asset is. I understand that the intention is for it to be able to handle pretty much anything it could potentially be required to handle, but this comes at the cost of me absolutely not being able to put together a game using it in 11 days. I have been banging my head against this asset for 3 days, and the sheer amount of new concepts and systems I have to familiarize myself with is unbelievable. In other words: the onboarding experience is awful. The documentation is hard to navigate and understand, and the YouTube tutorials never failed to utterly confound me. Answers can be found on the forums, but just reading an answer that says "do this, then this, and then this" solves my specific problem, it does not result in my understanding *why* I had to do that. I am genuinely wondering how a new user is supposed to learn how to use something as counterintuitive as this asset. (Currently I am trying to figure out why adding "AnimatorTrigger(Gesture)" to the Sequence field of a dialog node to trigger an animation causes the whole NPC line to appear at once instead of being spelled out letter by letter like in any other node. It also causes my response selection box to update its options, then fade out and immediately fade back in again instead of disappearing, and then fading back in a bit later like it does on any other node. This is nonsensical, there is no reason for character body animations and the way text and responses are displayed to affect each other.) I am willing to bet that for someone with infinite time and patience, this is a great and versatile asset, and I can only hope that one day, I will be able to understand it and use it to its full potential. Yet I strongly feel as though my decision to use it will lead to me absolutely not passing those classes. So far the only thing this asset has returned on my investment in it was several serious mental breakdowns and occasional suicidal ideation.

Hi! It sounds like you have some questions which I'd be happy to quickly clear up. Please post on the forum (https://forum.pixelcrushers.com/) and I'll explain how and why to accomplish what you want to accomplish. To answer the one question you mentioned in your reply, unless you require the player to click a continue button to advance the conversation (by setting the Dialogue Manager's Display Settings >Subtitle Settings > Continue Button mode to Always), subtitles will appear onscreen for as long as the duration of the dialogue entry's Sequence. Since the AnimatorTrigger() command finishes immediately,the Sequence ends immediately. There's a "{{default}}" button you can click to tell the Sequence to also play the Default Sequence, which defaults to a delay based on text length. It is hard to overstate how good this asset and its developer are. First, D.S. provides an enormous amount of flexibility with minimal effort. Second, after using this asset for a couple years I can confidently say the developer is top tier in support. I have had countless questions answered anytime I tried to do weird stuff with the kit. Lastly, if you're still undecided, consider how many updates this kit receives and the level of integration with the other assets from the developer. I don't like leaving 5 star reviews as I hold the idea to a VERY high standard . In this case, Dialogue System has easily achieved the rating.

I say this , as a purchaser of many products here in the asset store, and many gripes with purchased assets over the years, from abandoned and left here, to maybe not so abandoned, but not so well maintained either. The Tool itself, is literally amazing, allowing one to easily set up and run quests, conversations, cutscenes and cinematics, as well as drive so much more, so very easily. Its actually quite diffcult to encompass all this tool can do, especially when you just have the title 'Dialogue System', as at first, many might thing, well , it just manages dialogue, like many others. But on no... this is not the case. This tool has become a staple in everything i do, as it offers so much. From saving and loading data (your choice of player prefs, or better yet json), to scene transitions and more. It is by all means, a powerhouse tool. Templates are offered for custom save data, custom sequences, and more, and not to repeat myself, but the list of what a sequencer can do , is just far to extensive to get into here, but... you can do so much , so easily. Amazing. Having dealt with many developers and their online discord support, i can honestly say, there is none better than Tony Li. Continuosly delivering quality updates, and expanding the system, even delivering critical patch updates if reported live on server... His support is again, by all means, unparalleled by the competition. Thank you sir, for such an amazing product, and support.

I've been using Dialogue System for Unity for about 2 months now, and the default components it provides are so poorly made and complicated that not a single one can be used as-is. I'm making a simple RPGMaker-style game, but if I use this as-is, I'll never be able to make an actual game—at best I could make a conversation simulator. The worst piece of among them is the dialogue input window—there's no Undo function, poor sorting, and inputting languages other than English is weird too. It's better to input and import separately from elsewhere. I bought it thinking I could just click on components and everything would work automatically, but to use this thing, you basically need to do some coding. You have to custom-make everything yourself. But I guess it can't be helped—RPGs with dialogue all have different systems. It seems like the asset developer made it this way trying to make it work without issues across all projects. I do appreciate that the developer is working hard answering questions one by one on the forum though. To use this asset without major problems, it seems more appropriate for programmers to use it when they already have a system somewhat established.

I use Dialogue System and Quest Machine, and both work amazingly together and individually. Tony Li of Pixel Crushers is amazing too, as he's always respectful and is always quick to answer questions about his assets on his discord server.

Not only it supports conversations and complex interactions, it comes with a battery of solutions that are supported heavily. Documentation is really nice and vendor support is first level, issues and questions are answered really fast by developers in either forum or discord. Really a must for any game that requires NPCs conversation and if you bought it already it can be used for other simple things as well.

Like many others have expressed, this tool is very powerful and honestly does everything you would expect it to do and then some. It tries to keep everything as simple as possible and does a lot of heavy lifting I was not honestly expecting. But the best part about it is, the creator is not only kind, but he also really cares about your success, he helps very quickly incase you encounter any issue or just trying to understand something more. I'm so glad this asset exists!!
