Great Asset

DrewofDonutson version 2.2.5
In just about every way, this is better than timeline. Not only is it more intuitive, but it has a ton of very practical and accessible features that speed up the process significantly.
Also, a ton of new tutorials have been released (2025) on the asset, which I agree was a major gap in the past.

It has potential to be amazing, but not there yet...

I keep returning to this asset only to run away frustrated couple weeks after trying to use it. It has great ideas for interface, clip blending, and the whole workflow. On top of that, very easy to extend with custom clips. It is superior to Unity Timeline on the surface level without a doubt. However, what I find frustrating is the lack of attention to detail. After starting to work with more complex scenes, you start seeing little quirks. I could get past that, if it weren't for the nature of the quirks - that is the animation could be behaving differently in the editor compared to play mode. I had a character oriented a certain way in the preview, and then it ended up different in play mode. Also the pathfinding ended up behaving differently (the character spinning around when walking through waypoints, but only in playmode). Remaking this in timeline resulted in everything working perfectly. In the end I identified this as something having to do with "Look At" track in Slate. This makes both for frustratingly hard process to debug those issues, but what is worse I don't trust the product to "just work" in release. I'd always be worried the animation might play out differently than designed becuase of some quirk I didn't know about. Unity timeline is pretty basic compared to this, but at least what you see is what you get. The other issue are the extensions. Feels like there's little to no quality control(while they are advertised on the website). In particular FinalIK has some really ...unfortunate... decisions. Once you create a track for limb control, it defaults to right arm - and the IK controller is automatically set the tip of the limb - great. When you switch the limb however(lets say to left leg), the target stays the same so the leg bends like crazy to reach for the right arm tip. So you need to go and manually change the target each time you switch a limb in any clip. Same for when you switch from Cutscene space to Actor space. Instead of the limb control point staying in place - it just flies away - for some reason its not recalculated to the new transform space. For many of my IK controls I want the actor space and its frustrating switching to that space for each clip & moving the control points each time. So as I said, great on the surface, for simpler stuff superior to Unity Timeline, but shaky when it comes to the basics and extensions (FinalIK at least) might feel like put together quickly with little regards to actual workflow.

Hello and thank you for writing your review. If you encountered a case where editor and play modes are different then there is probably something that slipped away. Slate is all about "what you see is what you get". However I tried replicating such a case with some of your mentioned points above (pathfinding, look at, starting actor positions) but wasn't able to. It could also be that some other script (which Slate has no control over) was affecting the character in runtime in your project. Could you send me an email with a small reproduction project at support_at_paradoxnotion.com please? Regarding the FinalIK integration (and spaces in general), indeed the IK target positions do not change when the 'Transform Space' change from Cutscene to Actor and vica-versa, but it's not cause of lack of attention to detail (which Slate has plenty to be honest). The reason is that the IK target position value is always relative to the space chosen (so 0,0,0 always be the center of that space), which may also already be keyframed (in which case all keyframes will also need to be adjusted when changing space to achieve what you mentioned). With that said I understand your reasoning from a UX perspective and will look into this. Best regards.

Slate is very well made, easy to understand and very performant. I bought this asset in 2021 and, since, I've used it in every projects! Docs could be better though.

Finally I got to try this out and as I expected, I was NOT disappointed. I've used NodeCanvas from these guys and their understanding of what makes a good UI really enhances their tools. Things are easy to find, really intuitive and I only had to refer to the docs for a basic understanding of the tool. So much easier than Timeline & Cinemachine and it doesn't pollute your other game objects.
They have sooo many tools already built in to support almost anything you can think of.
I'm glad I never wasted too much time on Cinemachine & Timeline. This tool is just so sweet.
Although to address the concerns of other reviewers, they are right as far as support goes. I never heard much from the publisher but there are a few active helpers on Discord. And yes, video documentation would make this tool 10x better. Got stuck a few times and found my way out trying different solutions.
Didn't really come across any bugs yet.

Buggy, frustrating

JuniorLongfellowon previous version 2.2.1
The asset promises a lot, however I regret learning to use it. Even after six months it's still frustrating to use. Updates come twice a year with 4 maybe 5 changes per update and are rarely actual fixes. The discord is just users trying to help each other since the dev is no where to be found.

Still needs time

Unfortunately I don't recommend this asset over Unity's native TimeLine.
It sill needs time to develop.
Professionals always follow Universal Intelligence. Therefore they spend really short time to learn each others' products.
I spent more time than it should be to learn this product and still I can not find what I am looking (at the place where Universal intelligence can find immediately)

Hello and thank you for your review. The UI/UX of Slate is heavily inspired by animation software that I have also professionally used in the past like After Effects, Maya, Softimage, Cinema4D e.t.c. If you like to, please come by the forums and let me know of any suggestions you may have since user feedback and suggestions are always taken into account in future updates. Best regards.

The unity time line limited me a lot, I could not control blendshapes and IK and this asset saved me! I was a little scared to buy it, because there are unsatisfied reviews. But still a sale and 50% off and I did it. After a day of digging around in it I can say it's worth it! A lot of chips. I was also pleased that there are additional components for integration such as Playmaker, FinalIK, LipSync, Unity Cinimachine and others. If your game has scenes, then you must have this asset!

Could be the Ultimate Cutscene maker -- A BiG BUT :-(

FunkyBuddhaon previous version 2.1.7
I'll go straight to the point, this is a great asset for making cutscene if you are a type of person who are patient enough to go through text documentation with some few ....well gif images. Upon buying the asset I was expecting It'll be a walk in the park to use it, but no, as I mentioned above you have to read the documentation. What's LACKING????, video yt tutorials, I mean, as I learned--- the asset is around 7 years old and yet the publisher didn't even took the time to make some short simple tutorials, even like moving simple 3d cubes objects, and especially with cameras. As I search yt, guess what there are about 4 badly made tutorials about the asset. Any way hopefully the publisher would consider making yt tutorials as this asset in my opinion is the best with cutscene creation in asset store for now if you are a Unity intermediate user. As of this moment, I'm still struggling on learning to use this asset, if you're a newbie, keep your money or better go somewhere else find a much simpler cutscene creator asset or much better hit youtube and look for cinemachine cutscene tutorials, it's free and you won't spend a dime. I would gladly rate this asset 5 stars only if more yt tutorials are available, for now I give it a 2.

Hello. Slate is not unsupported at all. I do not see any non-replied emails in my inbox and even if I happened to miss an email it doesn't mean it is unsupported. There are also the support forums where I always answer all posts, as well as the discord server. Best regards.
