Needs Updating

kendo353on previous version 2.1.1
TL;DR: I really wanted to like this. The Pros ======= There are a lot of good ideas in the framework. It has some real depth. And if you can afford to spend the time mining for them, there are some great nuggets in it. When it works, it is indeed a comprehensive framework for your own game. Provided you start with the framework, and do not attempt to bolt it onto your own game (like i stupidly did). I really like the turret and gun system. it is simple to knock up any kind of weapon you can imagine, and place them onto your ship models, with minimal fuss. The Cons ====== The author has not heard of TMPro. The framework has an over reliance on his own GUI system, and consequently all of the UI is text based and blurry. When you update it... all of the scaling breaks. So you are better off writing your own GUI. A huge time sink. :( Sadly, it reeks of not having been updated since 2014. and I expected more polish from a premium asset. Finally, the thing that really irks me the most. Is firing projectiles. It could be just ..... 'gun.... shoot'. Job Done. But you will have to check each projectile, and where it is firing from, from 5 (or so) different files. That seemed un-necessarily complicated. and took the shine off of the ease with which weapons could be manufactured. While we are talking projectiles, i'd also like to point out that you can only shoot from single barrel cannons. There is no support for dual or multibarrel weapons/turrets. Which for a sci-fi sim, is a bit of a short coming. And just felt "lazy". Sorry. Verdict ====== it feels like it is half baked. Particularly on the RTS side of things. And it is in bad need of an update. After three+ months of daily use, I feel i'm finally getting a handle on this codebase. Some things had me scratching my head thinking "WTF would you do that?.". On that issue, I echo what "mister two star" said. Don't want to badmouth the author, because some very nice work has been done in the past. but more needs to be done. I will continue to use it, and patch it best i can. thankyou, Sincress. I hope i have been fair and honest.

Very good asset for its price. Some parts of code and developer's implementations of different features are weird in my opinion, but you get used to them and they do not require refactoring, despite of some reviews. Overall I have no problems of adding new features and content like ship shield, missions or Pilot skills system. Asset helped me to save a lot of time. 5 stars!

A great asset and a great developer

I love the asset. It's not perfect but it's definitely a five-star asset for me. The developer is very supportive and he is a very humble person as well. I hope he keeps updating the asset and make it better and better. I also wish the developer greater success in what he does.

Working but unuseable

toxictoddleron previous version 2.1
Technically the asset does what it advertises. If you import it into an empty project it works, no errors in the console. Everything is fine. Why then only two stars? TL:DR: Bad code. Bad design. It is hard to impossible extend on it. Inexperienced developers will have trouble with building upon it and experienced develeopers will not want to. Overall frustrating experience to work with. If you want to work with this asset it is an infinite amount of hassel. It beginns with nothing being namespaced. So you will set out to namespace all the classes. While you do that you will get the feeling you are seeing way to many hard coded string references. Diving deeper you see classes stacked on top of each other e.g. the AI depending on the PLAYERinput. I will not go into detail why this will become a problem. When you now try to use the demo scenes. You will see that the namespacing broke some classes since they relied on metadata references being as the publisher expected them to be. At this point it became clear that this asset suffers from inexperience and as a consequence bad code and design decisions. It works in its specific context but is far from being a Framework. You will spent more time figuring out how the developer intended it to be used and then trying to rewire/rewrite it, compared to just writing it from scratch. This is basically what others already wrote before me, but since they opted for 4-5 stars I expeted the coding problems to be inefficiencies not fundamentals. Two stars: Because it has some nice ideas for features and some implementations are pretty solid.

Thank you for your feedback. I designed this asset while focusing on making the codebase maintainable and extendable, and though I agree there are improvements that can be made to the project, this is a result of 5 years of work. Some fundamental design decisions had never been reviewed as I focused on adding new features and fixing various bugs (it's hard to test edge cases in a project with dozens of features all by yourself). Since you've mentioned concrete problems, I'll focus on fixing them for the next update. Despite being thankful for your feedback, I feel that the low rating is unwarranted. I hope you enjoy using the Space Sim Framework and stay on the lookout for the next update. EDIT: I've published an update which fixes the issues you've specified and adds more features: the code is now namespaced, minor issues were fixed, the user experience enhanced, lootable wrecks added, more ship models and scrap fields.

The framework does what is supposed to do! There are a lot of good ideas inside the framework! Initially I wanted to extend the product but the code is far from good, but it shows a clear evolution in coding skills through the different classes. I have started to rewrite the framework but drop it, its easier to start a new one from scratch. Please don't take my words in the wrong way, I do feel that your work is a valuable, and is an amazing project! I would buy it again :). Thank you and keep the good work! Best regards.

Hi, thank you for your constructive criticism. The codebase is an evolution of more than two years of development. Please tell me which parts you consider unclear or which ones you'd like me to simplify. I am working on an update and would gladly improve the codebase.

Grabbed this pack after seeing the showcase video, decided to use it for a side project. First I asked the developer a few questions to see if the package was right for me, and their response was polite and actually quite helpful. After downloading the asset, I had a few bugs and wasn't able to replicate what was shown in the video. However I had imported into an existing project, and despite no clear indication of conflicts, it just didn't work properly. So I reached out to the developer and reported the issues, they were quick to respond and were able to provide support to assist me with some issues on my end, and also able to take bug reports on board and apply the fixes their end in updates. This is a perfect example of customer/dev interaction that resulted in success for both of us, and is really refreshing to see! Normally I hold to my rule of 4 stars for templates (because a perfect 5 is cheesy), but so far my only negative point is maybe having the flight controls added to the documentation in the project, as it took me a while to discover them! and I don't think that's worth taking a star off.

Hi, I will make sure to separate the flight controls (not have them hardcoded) and to remove any issues which would prevent the asset from working out of the box. In the next update I'll also include bugfixes, optimizations and improvements that people have requested. Thank you for your kind words!

Sincress has done a great job with their new version of Space Sim Framework. Its easy to work with and fun. It provides a great base to start from to develop my own space sim. SIncress is polite and listens to users and reacts quicky to bugs / questions. Keep up the great work!

A bit lacking in a trade part - you can actually sell mounted weapon and fall into nullrefrence state. Or sell item and do not close sell menu - wich will allow you to sell same items even if none present:) But that is easy fixable and i hope author will keep improving it) And one more thing - a controls map in readme would be very nice to have - not to look throu code for shift+w and shift +c combinations:)
